130th CoR plenary session  

The members of the European Commitee of the Regions met on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th July in the 130th plenary session.

On the first day, representatives of national associations of local and regional authorities discussed with CoR members about the Future of Europe. Ms Juliane Bogner-Strauss, Federal Minister for women, families and youth, presented the priorities of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

On the second day, Mr Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action & Energy, Mr Tomasz Chruszczow, High-Level Climate Champion of the Polish Ministry of the Environment, Mr Ashok Alexander Sridharan, President of ICLEI, and Mariusz Skiba, Deputy Mayor of Katowice, discussed with members about climate change.

Eleven opinions were on the agenda of the plenary session:

Migratie, cohesie, klimaat: ‎ lokale en regionale leiders debatteren over de toekomst van Europa

Lokale en regionale leiders van de EU komen op 4 en 5 juli in Brussel bijeen om over kwesties te spreken die regio's en steden na aan het hart liggen. Op de eerste dag van de plenaire zitting zullen de leden van het Europees Comité van de Regio's (CvdR) samen met leiders van nationale verenigingen van lokale en regionale overheden voorstellen formuleren voor de totstandbrenging van een duurzaam, inclusief en innovatief Europa. De volgende dag, en niet lang nadat de EU haar energie- en klimaatdoelstellingen voor 2030 heeft aangescherpt, zullen Miguel Arias Cañete, de EU-commissaris voor Klimaatactie en Energie, de Poolse speciale gezant voor klimaatverandering en de burgemeesters van Bonn (gastheer van het COP23-klimaatoverleg) en Katowice (gastheer van de COP24) een discussie leiden over wat de EU moet doen om haar verbintenissen uit het klimaatakkoord van Parijs na te komen. Ook de winnaars van de prijs voor meest "Ondernemende Regio van Europa 2019", die wordt toegekend aan de regio's met de meest succesvolle ondernemingsstrategieën in Europa, zullen bekend worden gemaakt. De leden van het CvdR zullen verder de aandacht vestigen op twee van de meest urgente lokale en regionale kwesties – EU-migratie en regionaal beleid – en de plannen van het Oostenrijkse EU-voorzitterschap voor de komende zes maanden bespreken.
