European and global stakeholders in the Electronic Components and Systems field, from Industry, Research and Financial Communities as well as European, National and Regional decision makers and international partners, will get together in Malta on the 13th and 14th of June 2017, for the first Symposium organised by the tripartite Joint Undertaking "Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership" (ECSEL JU). Tripartite means that the JU includes the engagement of Industry, the European Commission and a group of Participating States.
Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) "make things smart" by developing real solutions with a great impact on the daily life of all European citizens through technology. The Symposium will showcase results and future plans of the ECSEL JU funded projects so far, as well as their impact on essential topics such as Health, Mobility and Competitive Production. The second day will host panel discussions led by professional journalist and broadcaster Karen Coleman with leading European industrialists and political influencers who will talk about how to optimise synergies and seize opportunities offered by the ECSEL JU among the various instruments at European, National and Regional level.
Bert De Colvenaer, Executive Director of the ECSEL JU declared: "This event will not only showcase the excellent progress of this unique Joint Undertaking, but also bring together key players in other R&I sectors to explore how we can build on this experience and work together for a better future. The world is moving very fast in the ECS sector, and our task is ultimately to put this technology to work for the benefit of the European society. Our approach of thinking together, working together and investing together, on the scale that the ECSEL JU model can achieve, will be key in assuring prosperity for us all".
Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of Regions declared: "In today's fast changing, digital world, EU regions and cities are using their local knowledge for place-based, smart specialisation strategies to boost economic transformation. The CoR is challenging regions and cities to be pioneers, whilst calling for simplified, flexible, policies which support regional innovation ecosystems and allow SME's and larger companies to flourish and grow".

About ECSEL JU
The "Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership" (ECSEL) is a Joint Undertaking established in June 2014 by the European Union Council Regulation No 561/2014. It is a public-private partnership that will engage, for 2014 to 2020, up to 1.17 billion euro funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, combining it with a commensurate amount of national/regional funding and participants’ own contributions to leverage about 5 billion euro Research and Innovation investments in nanoelectronics, embedded and cyber-physical systems, and system integration technologies. The R&D actors are represented by the associations AENEAS, ARTEMIS-IA and EPoSS.
