A new Ambassador in town: the European week of Regions and cities gets Brussels' Capital Region's award

The European week of Regions and cities – the world's largest event dedicated to local development, coorganised by the European Committee of the Regions and the European Commission – is now a 'Brussels' Ambassador'. The Brussels Capital Region has rewarded the event with the Ambassador prize recognising its contribution to uphold Brussels' image. The award has been handed to the European Committee of the Regions and to the European Commission on 31 January in the course of a gala dinner held at the BOZAR theatre.

The ceremony has celebrated those who in the course of the last three years have contributed to rising and strengthening Brussels' image as the main European hub for the organisation of large scale international events.

The laureates including Brussels' Affordable Art Fair (BRAFA) and the International Expo Sciences and ArtBrussels, were selected in light of their specific expertise in organising large scale international conferences and attract tourists and visitors to the Belgian capital.

Thanks to the 657 meetings and events which took place in 2016, Brussels has reinforced its position as the first European location for large scale conferences and the second worldwide.

The 2016 edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities has attracted over 5280 participants from over 58 countries; 3 out of 4 travelled to Brussels to attend the event.

Over the last 10 years the European Week of Regions and Cities has brought together almost 60.000 participants and over 2500 media representatives. Moreover, there have been over 1200 workshops and over 2500 local events organised around the Week's themes since 2007.

The very dedicated and passionate team in charge of the European Week of Regions and Cities at the Committee of the Regions is already at work to organise the 2017 edition, the 15th European Week of Regions and Cities.
