Erasmus: Building Together the Future of the EU

This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus Programme.
Erasmus+ is the EU’s overarching programme for education, training, youth and sport. The original Erasmus began in 1987 as an exchange programme that gave higher education students a taste of life and learning abroad.

As the Chair of the CoR's SEDEC Commission Yoomi Renström (SE/PES) said: "Erasmus is instrumental for improving the quality of learning and promoting the European dimension of education while strengthening European identity and encouraging teacher and learner mobility. Local and regional authorities have a role to play in these endeavours."

We are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. The CoR adopted a resolution marking the launch of an extensive citizens' consultation process on "Reflecting on Europe". In their resolution, EU local and regional leaders also call for a Europe able to restore citizens' confidence in the European project, able to provide effective and prompt solutions to the major common challenges and, a Europe which recognises the importance of ensuring young people's specific needs and open dialogue
between peoples of all generations.

For these reasons Navarra is organizing and event on 60th anniversary of Rome
and 30th anniversary of Erasmus, under the title “Erasmus: building together
the future of the EU”. The debate is opened to the general public. It is initiated by two Members of the European Committee of the Regions, Uxue Barkos Berruezo and Mikel Irujo Amezaga. Two other CoR Members will participate in this debate: Kieran Mccarthy (IE/EA) and Tanya Hristova (BG/EPP). The Rector of the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and the President of the Government of Navarra will close the debate.
