Quality of Government in EU Regions: Patterns across Space and Time Launch of the third edition of the European Quality of Government Index

Date: Tuesday, 27 February 2018

Time: 12:45 – 14:00

Place: European Committee of the Regions, Rue Belliard/Belliardstraat 99-101, Brussels, room JDE 70

What is quality of government (QoG) and why is it important for the future of the European Union (EU) economic and democratic development?  Moreover, how do we measure this concept?

This seminar, held by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, discusses the pervasive value of QoG for socio-economic development and presents the 2017 round of the ‘European Quality of Government Index‘ (EQI), the only comparable measure of quality of government at the sub-national level covering the whole European Union territory.

The EQI is composed of three broad aspects of governance, corruption, quality and impartiality of public sector institutions and services. To date, the EQI is the measure of quality of institutions based on the largest survey data on citizen attitudes and experiences of key public services in the EU.

Three editions of the index are now available to show improvement or decline over time. New, online and interactive scorecards allow for easy benchmarking of a region relative to all other regions in the EU and regions with a similar GDP per head.

The event invites representatives of regional, national and European parliaments, governments and associations as well as researchers and experts from EU institutions, universities and think tanks who want to know more about how to measure quality of government in the EU regions.

Speakers:

  • Bo Rothstein, August Röhss Professor of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden;
  • Nicholas Charron, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden;
  • Moray Gilland, Head of Unit of Policy Development and Economic Analysis Unit, European Commission, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy.

The event will be web-streamed
