In cooperation with the Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Commission will hold the second edition of the Digital Agenda Assembly on 21-22 June 2012 in Brussels. CoR member Markku Markkula (FI/EPP), Member of Espoo City Council, will take part in the panel discussions and be presenting the "Web-entrepreneurs Awards".
The Digital Agenda Assembly is a significant milestone in the delivery of the Digital Agenda which is the European Union's (EU) strategy to promote information society. It provides a unique opportunity to encourage discussion and networking amongst information society stakeholders, bringing together representatives of authorities from European and third countries, EU institutions, civil society, industry, and citizens.
The main objectives of the Assembly are to:
- assess progress on the implementation of the Digital Agenda's goals and actions and seek ways to improve delivery;
- identify challenges faced by information society generally and potential risks during the implementation of the Digital Agenda;
- mobilise stakeholders' to make further progress and address challenges.
The Assembly consists of an online space for discussions launched ahead of the event, eight workshops on key Digital Agenda topics and a plenary session to report feedback on previous discussions and hold debates on the way forward.

Markku Markkula (FI/EPP), CoR member, will intervene in the panel discussion on "Delivering Internet-based innovation as a way out of the crisis: the role of Horizon 2020". "Horizon 2020" is the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and is meant to serve as the financial instrument implementing the Europe 2020 flagship initiative "Innovation Union" aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness.
As a member of the CoR Commission for Education, Youth, Culture and Research (EDUC), Markku Markkula is the CoR rapporteur of the "Horizon 2020" opinion, which is due to be adopted at the next CoR Plenary Session on 19 July.
