Developing entrepreneurship in insular areas: Challenges, opportunities and policy responses

It is widely recognised that entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of EU and worldwide economy, leading to job creation, innovation and economic growth. SMEs on islands face constraints and extra costs resulting from the characteristics of insularity. However these specific characteristics can be mitigated and perhaps even turned into opportunities through interventions in line with the principle of sustainability and addressing a range of cross-cutting policy areas.

The objective of the seminar is to promote entrepreneurship by identifying policy practices to mitigate the risks faced by entrepreneurs located on islands, with the wider aim of fostering resilience, combating seasonality and stimulating the sustainable socio-economic development of island communities.

The seminar will include two panel debates, one focussing on challenges and opportunities and the other on the required policy responses.
