COP 22 Climate Change Conference

07/11/2016 18/11/2016 Marrakech
The 22nd Session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) will be held in Marrakech from 7 to 18 November 2016.
COP22 will take over the reins from COP21 during which important progress was made. It will focus on action items in order to achieve the priorities of The Paris Agreement, especially related to adaptation, transparency, technology transfer, mitigation, capacity building and loss and damages. The COP22 will be the forum to underline the specificity of the Mediterranean area and move towards a common climate change agenda for the region.
The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) will take part as Observer in the official EU Delegation. In this way, the EU Delegation does not only represent the national level of EU Member States but also their regional and local levels. Markku Markkula, president of the European Committee of the Regions, will represent the voice of European local and regional governments alongside with ENVE President and COP22 Rapporteur Francesco Pigliaru.
Fully supporting the goals of the EU Delegation, the European Committee of the Regions will contribute to various side events which will give the opportunity to share successful actions against climate change on regional levels with other stakeholders from around the world. These events will also aim at continuing the discussion on the implementation of the Paris climate agreement; reinforcing climate multilevel governance and promoting the Covenant of Mayors in Morocco and beyond. Around 30 members of the CoR recently became Covenant of Mayors Ambassadors, a group of local and regional leaders engaged in promoting the benefits of joining the Covenant, EU's largest energy and climate initiative.
The Commission for Sustainable Territorial Development of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) will meet on Tuesday 15 November in Marrakech. Two reports will be discussed:
- Report on Cross-border Cooperation in the Mediterranean region
Rapporteur: Mr Francesco Pigliaru, President of the Sardinia region, Italy
