Stakeholder consultation by the Rapporteur Mr Roberto PELLA (IT/EPP - EDUC)

24/05/2011   Committee of the Regions, rue Belliard 99-101, 1040 Brussels, Room JDE 63
Roberto Pella (IT/EPP)

The Committee of the Regions is drafting an opinion on the Communication from the Commission "Developing the European Dimension in Sport" COM(2011) 12 final.

EU-level cooperation and dialogue on sport have been greatly enhanced thanks to the 2007 White Paper on Sport. Through the implementation of the White Paper on Sport, the Commission has gathered useful evidence regarding themes to be addressed in the future.

This Communication does not replace the White Paper but builds on its achievements, addressing 15 priorities, grouped together in four main sections.

Sport has an effective contribution to make to achieve the EU's long term strategic goals, in particular the Europe 2020 targets. The Communication focuses mainly on interaction between the Member States and addresses regional aspects of sport primarily in terms of regional development and employability, as part of the economic dimension of sport.

However, local and regional authorities have the institutional role of providing services to the public in the area of sport and recreational and cultural activities. These services are important instruments for furthering social inclusion and the fight against discrimination. In addition, local and regional authorities play an essential role in motivating people to take up sport and providing funding for sports activities and the facilities they require.

The Rapporteur on the opinion, Mr Roberto Pella (IT/EPP), Member of the EDUC Commission of the CoR and Member of the Council of Valdengo, together with his expert Mr Demetrio Albertini are coming to Brussels and would be happy to meet with representatives of the associations of local and regional authorities and other stakeholders for a consultation and exchange of views on her opinion.

The consultation will focus on the issues raised by the Rapporteur in his working document. With simultaneous interpretation being provided, you will be able to speak in French, Italian, English while listening to English and Italian.

The Rapporteur would be very keen to hear your views during the meeting. For practical reasons, I would kindly ask you to confirm if you would like to attend, by sending an email to the addresses below.

The consultation will take place at the premises of the Committee of the Regions, rue Belliard 99-101, 1040 Brussels, room JDE 63 at 14:30 - 16:00.
