Stakeholder consultation by the Rapporteur Mr Markku MARKKULA (FI/EPP - ECOS)

26/05/2011   Committee of the Regions, rue Belliard 99-101, 1040 Brussels, Room JDE 61
Markku MARKKULA (FI/EPP)

Responding to the request from the upcoming Polish Presidency, the Committee of the Regions is drafting an opinion that aims to answer the question "How can the local and regional authorities best contribute to the implementation of the goals for the EU 2020 Strategy".

Now that the scene for action has been set by the seven flagship initiatives, it is time for action on the ground. The goals set by the strategy can best be achieved when all parties of the process act as partners in a well co-ordinated process. The Rapporteur is therefore going to find out the best practices at the local and regional level that can lead to achievement of the EU2020 targets and objectives. Some of the most important issues at stake are: need for a radical transformation through societal innovations, increasing competitiveness and social cohesion, territorial pacts to implement the EU2020 at local and regional level, and need for regional political ownership, to name but the few.

Further this, knowledge co-creation and regional collaboration will be promoted via the opinion of the Committee of the Regions.

The Rapporteur on the opinion, Mr Markku MARKKULA (FI/EPP), Member of the ECOS Commission of the CoR, and his expert, Ms Tuija HIRVIKOSKI would be happy to meet with representatives of the associations of local and regional authorities and other stakeholders for a consultation and exchange of views on his opinion.

The consultation will focus on a set of questions. These and a guidance document will be available in a week. With simultaneous interpretation being provided, you will be able to speak in Finnish, French and English while listening into English and Finnish.

The Rapporteur would be very keen to hear your views during the meeting. In addition, if you have any position papers touching upon the subject, you are welcome to send them to us by email to the addresses below.

The consultation will take place at the premises of the Committee of the Regions, rue Belliard 99-101, 1040 Brussels, room JDE 61 at 14:30 - 16:00.
