The ARLEM Commission for Sustainable Development (SUDEV) held its 5th meeting in Bethlehem, Palestine on 15 June 2013.
Following an invitation by its co-president Hani Abdalmasih Al-Hayek, Mayor of Beit Sahour, Palestine, the 5th meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly's commission for sustainable development (SUDEV) was held in Bethlehem. The meeting was opened, among others, by the Minister for Local Government, the European Union representative to the West Bank, Gaza Strip and UNRWA and the President of the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA). Political representatives of cities and regions in the EU and its Mediterranean partner countries discussed the local and regional dimension of water policy in the Mediterranean, with input, amongst others, from the Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean Dr Rafiq Husseini and by the CoR President Ramón Luis Valcárcel Siso who had elaborated an ARLEM report on local water management in the Mediterranean. The commission also discussed sustainable urban mobility in the Mediterranean, this year's priority topic, based on a policy paper by rapporteur Karim Bennour, president of the People's Assembly of Algiers province, Algeria.
